Advertising policy
The order of results is not for sale, and this page is the whole of what is.

Where this stands
We do not run advertising. There is no advertising anywhere on this site: no paid placement, no sponsored listing, no ad network, no ad script, no ad pixel and no advertising cookie. Nobody can buy a position in any comparison, and nobody can buy space beside one.
If that ever changes, this section is what changes with it, and it will say plainly what runs and on which pages. It is written from a single record of whether advertising is switched on, so this page cannot say one thing while the site does another.
The rule the rest of this page exists to protect
The order you see is distance and nothing else. When you have told this site roughly where you are, yards are listed nearest first. When you have not, they are in the order the registry holds them in. No listing field, present or future, enters that ordering, and no business can buy a position in it on any terms.
That is not a preference. It is the reason the rest of this site is worth reading. A directory whose order is for sale is an advertisement, and every honest number elsewhere on the page is worth less the moment one of them is bought.
What an ad is here
A separate, labelled block, in its own region of the page, marked Paid. It is not a row in a comparison, not a result, not a listing, and not a search hit. It sits beside the page's content in the way a notice board sits beside a road: visibly a different thing.
You can tell which business is paying for it before you click, because an ad that does not name its advertiser in the visible copy is refused.
Nobody in a comparison can buy space on it
A supply yard cannot buy an ad on a page that lists, compares or shows supply yards. Not a smaller ad, not a lower one, not one further down. None.
A yard that cannot buy a position could otherwise buy the space next to the position, and to somebody reading the page those are the same purchase. So the rule is mechanical rather than editorial: the code that chooses ads is given a plain fact about each page, whether that page shows yards, and a yard's ad is dropped from every page where it does. Three of the four page types that carry ads at all show yards, so in practice a yard's own ad has almost nowhere to go, and that is the intended outcome rather than an oversight.
Landscapers, contractors and other trades are not competing for a position in a comparison of supply yards, so this rule does not reach them.
Where ads can appear, and where they cannot
They can appear on the project guides, the plant pages, the how much calculator and the blog.
They cannot appear on the home page, the side by side comparison, any yard's own page, the listings pages, the order, payment, quote or confirmation pages, your account, the claim flow, the yard portal, the review pages, or these legal pages. That is an allow list rather than a block list: a page added to this site next year carries no advertising until somebody deliberately puts it on the list.
What an ad may not say
An ad is refused if it:
- states or implies a price, a discount or a percentage. The yard's listed price is the price on this site, and an ad quoting a different number breaks that promise on the same page that makes it.
- claims to be cheapest, lowest or best on price, or compares its prices to anybody's.
- names another business on this site.
- suggests Pilebase endorses, recommends, ranks, approves or partners with it. We endorse nobody. An ad is a purchase, not a recommendation, and it never becomes one.
- calls itself featured, recommended, top or number one, or otherwise implies the placement was editorial. The block is labelled Paid, and copy may not argue with the label.
- hides who is paying for it.
- prints a phone number that is not the advertiser's own published number.
Images are the advertiser's own, warranted in writing by a named person at that business before the image can be shown at all. An image without that record on file does not render, whatever else is true about it.
What is not collected
Nothing about an ad being shown is recorded. There is no impression count, no click count and no per ad statistic, which means there is no such thing as a report we could give an advertiser about who saw their ad. We do not know, and we did not build the thing that would have found out.
An ad is chosen from what the page is about and, if you have told this site where you are, the first three digits of that postcode. Not your account, not your history, not your orders, not your device. Two people reading the same page on the same day see the same ad, which is what it means for the choice not to be about either of them.
Clicking an ad takes you to the advertiser's own address. It does not pass through us on the way, because there is nothing on the way.
Reporting an ad
If an ad here is misleading, breaks one of the rules above, or should not be running, write to info@pilebase.io and say which page you saw it on. One person reads that address.
We can refuse or remove any ad at any time, and we do not owe an advertiser a reason beyond the rule it broke. An ad taken down mid term is refunded for the unused part.
