Buying material through Pilebase

The short version: it's free, the prices are the yards' own, and pickup orders go to the yard: straight to them where they have set up to receive orders here, and by a phone call from us where they have not. Run a yard yourself? Your FAQ is over here.

What does this cost me?

Nothing. No membership, no markup, and no account required, ever: the price a yard lists is the price you pay. We never mark up a yard's price. When the marketplace sends a yard an order, a yard that has claimed its listing would pay us a small fee on orders paid online; the buyer never does, and online payment is not switched on, so today no fee is collected from anyone. (An optional free account exists if you want your orders from every yard in one place; ordering never requires one.)

Where do the prices come from?

From the yards themselves: either their own published price lists, or prices they've given us directly, or prices a yard maintains itself after claiming its listing. Every price shows its date, and whether the yard told us that price or we read it off their published page that day. Prices change, so the yard's counter total is always the final word. Here's exactly how listings are built.

Do you sell placement?

No. Not the order of results, not a "featured" slot, not a better position, not at any price. The order you see is distance from you and nothing else, and no yard can pay to move up it, ever. If we ever sell an ad, it will be a separate block on the page marked Paid, it will never be mixed into a comparison, and no business that appears in a comparison will be able to buy space on that comparison. Our advertising policy is the whole of what we would and would not do.

What does the ≈ mean next to a price?

One yard sells river rock by the ton, the next by the cubic yard. Where a yard publishes how much its own unit holds, we convert its price to the other unit so they compare, and mark the converted figure with ≈. Where a yard hasn't published that, we don't convert. The yard's own listed price is always shown right beside it.

How does ordering ahead for pickup work?

Pick the yard, pick the material and quantity, tell them what you're driving and roughly when you'll arrive. The yard confirms or declines, and you follow it on a tracking link; leave an email and you get the link and each change by email too. Drive in, get loaded, pay at the counter the way you always would. No standing in the office line.

Do I pay online?

Not yet. You pay the yard at pickup, cash or card, exactly as you would if you'd phoned the order in. Nothing is charged when you place the order, and canceling before pickup costs nothing.

What if the yard can't fill my order?

They decline with a reason you actually see: out of that material, closing soon, can't load that vehicle. Nothing is charged. Your tracking link always shows the order's real status.

Can I get it delivered?

Yes. On yards with confirmed prices you can place a delivery order right on their page: where the yard publishes a delivery rate card you see the real fee before you order, and everywhere else the yard confirms the fee before anything is owed. For everything else there's the quote form: tell us the material, roughly how much, and your zip, and a real person follows it up with the nearest yards and comes back with a yard's own price. Many yards also take delivery orders directly by phone, and their numbers are on every listing.

How much material do I need?

Describe the project on the project planner: "enough brown mulch for a 500 square foot bed, 3 inches deep" comes back with the quantity worked out in cubic yards.

Is my information sold or shared?

Sold, never. Not to an advertiser, not to a data broker, not to anyone. There are no analytics scripts, no ad pixels and no tracking cookies on this site. Browsing and ordering set no cookies at all; if you create an account, signing in sets one cookie that keeps you signed in and does nothing else. Your tracking link shows one order and nothing else.

Shared, in three places, and we would rather name them than say "no". What you type in an order goes to the yard filling it: your first name, your phone number, and on a delivery the address. A price request goes to up to four yards by name, and each of them that has claimed its Pilebase listing sees your name, phone and email in its yard portal. The form that asks an unlisted-price yard a question is built to pass your question and your contact details to that business; that is switched off today, and the form says so. And a handful of companies do a job for us, like sending our email, and MapTiler, which draws our maps and sees your IP address when a map loads. The privacy policy names the others and says what reaches each.
